How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups?

 

 

My target audience for my magazine was 16-24 year olds, predominantly students. I chose this audience as I am part of this group and I thought I would be able to target this group well as I know what consumers my age are looking for. I decided to make a pop/chart magazine because I feel that a large range of people are familiar with this type of music and that this enables me to target a larger audience.

I aimed my magazine at both males and females and I have tried to incorporate themes and ideas into the magazine that appeal to both genders.

 

Mise-en-Scene

In terms of costume I think that I reflected my target social group because I had my model wear a brightly coloured top from Topshop. I chose yellow because it reflected my music genre of pop and because it identifies with my target social group as the younger generation are seen as happy and joyful and the colour yellow carries these connotations.

The fact that the clothes she is wearing are from Topshop, a high-street brand make her more relatable to the audience. She is not portrayed to be above anyone else but to in fact fit in. My model Gabby fits in with the target age group and I think that this helps to attract my audience to as they can relate to her. I looked at existing products of pop magazines and photo shoots of existing artists to see how they were styled and to see if I could incorporate these looks with my own time limit and budget.

When styling my model I didn’t only have to think about clothing I thought about hair and make-up too. I looked at existing magazines such as Billboard and Top of the Pops to see how artists had been styled. As I wanted to make my cover artist as relatable as possible I kept her make-up fairly neutral. I was inspired by a billboard magazine cover where the artist had neutral eyes and a pink lip colour.

I decided to curl my models hair as it is a simple hairstyle that is relatable and easily re-creatable. I didn’t do an intricate braided style because although I think this would have fit in with my theme I still think the simple curled and pulled back style relates to the audience.

 

 

 How My Photo's Represent My Audience:

I got my models to pose in these particluar stances as I think they are interesting and they capture the readers attention. I got my cover model Gabby to look excited and use the props to show this excitement. I think this pose could be as if she is at a party, the use of the props shows spontaneity and happiness.
I got my contants page model Poppy to pose in a way that suggests she has secreats or gossip, or she told someone something she shouldn't have. I got her to pose like this because it links to the story I associated her with: 'Poppy Spills Her Secrets'. This story makes the reader interested, they want to find out whats these secrets are.

Audience Feedback – Representative of Social Groups

To get a real representation of how my magazine is taken by the target audience I composed a few questions and asked some people in the target group to answer them. I think this way I will get an accurate and realistic idea of how my magazine appeals to my target audience.

•1. Yes, the magazine covers the topics I’m interested in. It’s colourful and looks interesting to read.

•The interviews with some of the artists interest me, but the other content is not really aimed at my age range. I prefer to read magazines about celebrities and real life stories. It’s a magazine I would have been interested in at a younger age.

I think the images on the front cover of the magazine and the content pages appeal to my age group, because they're eye catching! They include a lot of the things I'm interested in at my age, 17, e.g. musicians and iPads. I'd definitely pick it up off the shelf.

•Yes, I think the price of the magazine is acceptable for my age group. It is enough to show its a higher end, well made magazine, but still in the price range that a student, like me, could afford.

•Yes, because from the images I can see that they are in the same age group as me, however, I feel that there could have been some images of males to balance it out if you are targeting males too as potential customers

•I think that it is a bit more expensive than I would be willing to pay as I do not have a steady income, however I have noticed the subscription offer which I would look into further prior to making a commitment.

 



My Response to Audience Feedback:

From my audience feedback I found that my magazine was received well by my target audience but it was preferred by the younger ages in my target audience as some of the images were not appealing to the older ages. Also to do with images I think that I could have included pictures of males to make my magazine more identifiable with the male audience.

Reader Profile

Before producing my magazine I identified the profile of readers. I did this by researching TV Shows, musicians and other products that are popular within my target social group and by looking at the reader profiles of existing magazines and seeing how they would fit with my target audience.

 

 

TV Shows: People between the ages of 14 and 26 tend to have free or leisure time in their lives so they are able to watch TV a lot. I have included popular TV Shows such as 'The X Factor' and 'Breaking Bad' for both the reality side of TV (The X Factor has a music element) and the more dramatic scripted side. The reality genre of TV appeals to this age group, as people find them entertaining and comedic. There are many other popular reality TV Shows that fit into this category such as 'I'm A Celeb' and `The Voice'. Shows such as 'Breaking Bad' and 'Pretty Little Liars' may be popular to the older people in the age group because of the dramatic element they have, and these types of shows are shown past 9 O'Clock and may not appeal to the younger people in the age group because they contain violence and bad language.

Possessions: Young people often have the latest technologies, mobile phones and iPods are very common now to the younger generation. Digital cameras are available readily to consumers and cameras are now part of the everyday smart phone. Social media sites such as Tumblr and Instagram allow people to share their photos online.

In todays society we are all connected through the use of the internet. As my product is aimed at the younger generation most people in this group will have access to the internet and have accounts on different social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr and Instagram. Each of these sites have different main purposes but through all of them different forms of media can be shared. I made sure that on my product were social media links and a website address so that my magazine could be accessed on different platforms and attract a wide range of readers.

 

I included some features on my products that the readers would be interested in that I found out were popular within  the social group. For example the younger generation of which my magazine is aimed at use the internet and social networking so I made sure to include these types of links. I included stories about artists that are popular with this social group too. I think it was important for me to think about what artists to mention as it is these names that would make the reader interested. I made sure that the artists mentioned are of the pop genre and would be recognised by a pop/chart fan. As previously mentioned, in todays society we love celebrity culture so seeing these well known names makes us interested, the reader wants to find out what the magazine has to say about them. A lot of the artists I have mentioned in my magazine target their music to the same age range and social group as my magazine, so having them in my magazine makes sense. 

 

Social Class & Demographics

 

Most of my target audience will be in the socio-economic group E or D because many will be students and are therefore relying on parents or a small, not well paid job for money, most of them will be in compulsory or higher education. Therefore, to appeal to the target audience I have to have an understanding of what they will like and what they can afford. I included stories about artists that are popular in this specific category and I priced my magazine at an affordable amount to attract a regular readership.

Opportunities, Interaction & Features

When producing my magazine I had to think about what conventions and features would attract my target audience.

I have included interactive elements into my magazine to make it more entertaining and interesting. The competition included is a chance for the reader to win an iPod touch and a £100 iTunes voucher. I chose these prizes as they link to the theme of my magazine. Also iPods are in my reader profile so I think that my target audience would be very interested in winning one, and the voucher will enable them to add the music they want themselves. The idea that the audience can win something makes them want to read on and find out how.

The quiz idea that I had I think adds entertainment value to my magazine, the readers can interact and it’s something fun to do, rather than just reading.

The subscription box that I added to my contents page includes an offer in which the reader can get all 24 issues of the magazine a year but for a discounted price. My magazine is a fortnightly magazine that would been around £1.80 - £2.30 in price. I think some people would find this to be quite expensive and as my target social group generally do not have steady jobs I think that giving them an option to buy all the magazines but at a discounted price is appealing to them.

College Magazine:

Although my college magazine includes typical conventions I feel that I did not experiment with them to show any creativity in my product.

When I was creating my college magazine I was new to using Photoshop so I don't think that I was able to use all the features that I would have liked to as I was not familiar with the programme.

I now feel more confident when using Photoshop, I think that I have progressed and my skills have improved. When I was creating my college magazine I only cropped my imagine and added text. I was only aware of the shadow tool to make the text stand out.

Although the colours in the picture were bright already I did not know who to change the colours to make the text stand out.

I added stories on the front cover however looking back I think that the sizes of them look disproportionate. I don't think that I set out the text well either as each separate article looks like they are joined together as they are not well spaced throughout the cover.
